Because of the wide availability of very high quality astronomical
observation equipment and the enthusiasm of large numbers of smart people
with enough leisure to exploit them, amateurs with an interest are helping
make strides in science. This is a Big Deal as far as I'm concerned -- not
this specific thing, especially, but the general principle of
amateurization. This is a step in the process of technological change --
individuals acquiring capabilities (through automation) that used to belong
to corporations or governments. That's one lens to look through when making
sense of system stats during cluster generation: what can one person do now?
