I don't think anyone can go far wrong looking at the Atomic Rockets website, the only problem is getting sucked in and forgetting why you are there.
I don’t have the rules yet, I had been waiting for them to come back in stock at Leisure Games in the UK and when they did I heard (here) about errata being collected for an updated version and thought that (for once) I should wait and get the revised edition. So apologies if I am way of the mark.
I must admit I am influenced by the Deadleus design, so I see a flat plate up front as an erosion shield with the rest of the ship, except for retractable sensor booms, tucked behind this. Up front will be accommodation and behind it a spine to the drives with fuel tanks and cargo pods strapped to it. Basically the ship is the spine with the erosion shield at one end, drives at the other and everything else wrapped around it. The cargo pods and probably the fuel tanks as well may be removed, replaced or jettisoned quite easily and are a standard size and connection – think ISO containers – to ease transhipment and come in a wide variety of types. It seems I am haunted by the Modular Cutter from Traveller as well as the containerised Harrier carrier conversion the RN tried back in the 80s.
