Hi,
I'm Tom (tomg) and I was in Ken and GamerChris's Diaspora game that Ken
posted about. I wanted to chime in on the game and Diaspora in general.
First off, I was not interested in Diaspora in the least until we did world
creation. That really got me interested. Then we did character creation.
Wow!
I'm hooked. I have played SOTC before and knew FATE was a great system. I
love Aspects and the character creation of SOTC is genius. Diaspora does an
excellent job of taking the best of FATE and tweaking it a bit to get its
own flavor. Great job.
About the game: I love it. I was very impressed with how the mutual
character creation actually changed my character for the better as we went
along. I started out thinking of Jind as a naive, wide-eyed new diplomat,
in over his head. As the phases went on and we merged our stories, he
changed into a strong but deceptively mannered, cunning guy who has a higher
calling. I really really enjoyed how he came out. It would not have
happened without the mutual creation. There were two real turning points
for this character. First, when Chris' character tried to blackmail Jind.
Jind's anger and sense of moral outrage really came through. The Aspect
"Sudden Backbone" really solidified it. The second came when Ken's
character was 'putting one over' on Jind. And Jind realized it but allowed
it to go through, against the advice of his major domo because he liked the
corpse broker and could see his true character. This set up one of his
Stunts - Reads People that will come in handy later I'm sure. Especially
coupled with the Aspect "Routinely Underestimated". I'm quite proud of that
one too.
I am impressed with the Social Combat mechanic. I did not completely follow
it (I haven't read the book, yet.) but I see a really good core mechanic
there that is fun and helpful. I like the 'setting stakes' aspect of it. I
find that setting stakes really enhances combats of any sort.
All in all I'm raring to go on this game.
I'll be posting my wrap up of the game on my blog, Go Forth And Game (
tomgurg.wordpress.com) soon.
