And here I thought it was an intentional combination of the real-world “delta-v” and the game-mechanical “shifts.”

Partially because we didn't want to precisely echo modern terminology everwhere as it distracts from the sense of removal from Earth. That's the bullshit answer.

The real answer is that it made for two Ds (Data and Delta-v) on the ship sheet when abbreviating. I suppse we could have used a real ∆.
