Brad
This sounds good. I'd be very interested in this. It's the feel I remember
from original Traveller all those years ago.

My Spirit of the Far Future project is a legal albatross but huge fun
to play, so I am faced with a few options, all of which were (until
recently) unappealing. I could be satisfied with SotFF as a personal
fan project and leave it at that. I could pursue and possibly resolve
the legal issues. I could file off the Traveller PI and hope no one
notices. Or I could bite the bullet and re-write it as a non-Traveller
project in the hard(ish) sf niche.
I've decided to go with the last option. I want something grittier
than the existing Fate SF fare and I am now happy with some background
material I've written for a hard sf environment. I can keep most of
SotFF and discard all the Traveller PI without having a game that
looks like Traveller in a clown suit. I intend to use this as an
opportunity to harden Traveller -- I'm keeping FTL though constraining
it even further, but I'm normalising spacecraft propulsion to reaction
drives of modern or somewhat superior technology. I'm using Vingian
technology constraints to keep the whole thing in a
"projectiles+lasers" technology zone and avoid massive transhumanism,
universal fabrication, and nanobot-solution-to-all-ills pitfalls.
Character creation, personal combat, and starship combat will remain
largely unchanged. World creation and starship creation will be
constructed from scratch. World creation, in particular, I see as a
pre-play group effort not unlike character creation. The end result
should be a small association of old systems (origins perhaps
forgotten), several having lost and regained space-faring technology
in the course of their history.
So, is anyone but me interested in such a thing?
The logical name, to me, is "Diaspora" but I see that was a failed sf
MMO a few years back. "Exodus" may suit.

All the money's gone -- nowhere to go.
But oh that magic feeling -- nowhere to go.
